Climate Foresight WorkshopEmpowering Designers for a Changing World at Domus Academy

Introduction
What if?
What if designers could prototype solutions for extreme climate conditions in real-time?
What if speculative design could unlock new ways to build climate-resilient cities?
What if strategic foresight could empower organizations to anticipate climate-driven disruptions?
Weak signals
Growing need for climate resilience in design education
Educational institutions are integrating climate foresight into their design curriculums to prepare students for future challenges.
Increased interest in rapid ideation with AI tools
Designers are leveraging Generative AI to quickly generate concepts and adapt to emerging climate trends.
Rising demand for scenario-based planning
Organizations are turning to strategic foresight to better prepare for unpredictable climate impacts.
Prototype
During the workshop, Heated facilitated rapid prototyping sessions where participants used speculative design techniques to develop concepts that :
- • Explored future climate scenarios impacting urban spaces.
- • Utilized Generative AI tools to accelerate ideation and concept development.
- • Produced speculative artifacts to visualize resilient urban environments.
- • Created actionable insights for climate adaptation strategies.

The workshop was focussed around rising temperatures in Milan and what small micro-fictions can emerge from it. We started with teaching students how to mine for weak signals using AI, then refining them through peer discussions. The students then worked on micro-fictions of new things that could emerge from these weak signals.

In the end, we had a fun discussion on how to present the results to stakeholders and inspire action. Are you interested in having such a workshop for your company to explore how climate change can affect your business?
